Biography

Richard Segal B.Comm., CLU, CFP, FPSC

Richard Segal was born and educated in South Africa where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from a prominent Johannesburg university. In 1977, he and his family emigrated to Canada where he continued his career, joining an established life insurance agency in Toronto.

As an experienced businessman and already successful insurance underwriter in South Africa, Richard was able to easily transfer his expertise and practice to Canada and quickly rose up the ranks to become a Qualified and Life Member of the industry's Million Dollar Round Table, distinguishing himself among the top 1% of insurance agents across Canada for this achievement. In 1982, he was granted the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation, became the President of the Toronto CLU Chapter, and a Trustee of the CLU Institute.

Richard has specialized in Financial Planning for executives since 1986, and holds certification as a Chartered Financial Planner (CFP). He is a past Director of the Ontario Chapter of the Canadian Association of Financial Planners and a former President of the Scarborough Estate and Financial Planning Council.

For more than a year, Richard Segal was a weekly guest on Closing Bell seen on City TV's Cable Pulse24, responding to the market commentary and other financial news of interest. In addition, he has been a regular guest on CHFI Radio's Money Talks, TVOntario's Small Business program, Rogers Cable financial planning series, and was a guest on a live national financial planning Question and Answer forum held on Global TV. Richard is a much sought after guest lecturer, and has spoken and run seminars for numerous institutions and organizations including Seneca College, the University of Toronto, and CCH Canadian Limited. He is a co-author of "Wealth Creation for the Salaried Executive". This book is a Canadian guide to executive and managerial compensation and tax planning.  He is also a co-author of "The TASK - The Trusted Advisor's Survival Kit" (Lexisnexis, 2009)

In 1982, in response to the specialized tax and financial needs of the self-employed and those engaged in professional practice, Richard established Baywood Financial Group, an entity specializing in financial planning for business owners and executives.

The Baywood Philosophy -

The financial planning needs of individuals engaged in business are quite different and distinct from those who derive the majority of their income from traditional employment sources. With most self-employed individuals and professionals, pension and retirement issues are almost exclusively self-provided and special attention must be paid to optimizing taxation and wealth transfer.

We at Baywood Financial Group know and clearly understand the sensitivities around these business matters when succession, asset management, leverage and disposal are comingled with the interim and ultimate personal needs of the owner and his or her family.

Our interest and focus is to generate consistent growth and wealth enhancement safely and securely over the long term, and to ensure that our clients meet their financial planning objectives.

The Baywood Advantage -

In a recent survey conducted across Canadian investors of all demographic lines, there were several trends of common interest tracked by the researchers. The most predominant of these findings was that over the past two years, investors were becoming much more knowledgeable about the market, and expressed a higher level of interest in participating in the management of their investment and retirement portfolios. This phenomenon was influenced by several factors which include:

...and of course many other contributing issues.

Each year has its fill of ups and downs and portfolio stability is of course, a primary concern to everyone who is currently active. There is often a danger in becoming tied to "old model" investment strategies that in time of recession or other adverse conditions, provides neither growth nor comfort. The market has in the past and will again in the future correct and begin to demonstrate stability and growth, and the job of the Advisor is to successfully guide his clients through this stormy period.

In a bull market it probably doesn't matter much with whom you place your investments, or which financial firm manages your transactions. However, when the economy once again demands more care and greater sensitivity, the firm you chose to deal with and the individual advisor's personal interest and understanding of your tolerance and objectives can make a significant difference to what finally appears on your bottom line.

Baywood Financial Group is a small, "boutique" firm specializing in financial planning for self-employed business people and professionals. Unlike many Bay Street firms, our working environment is "up-town" and modest. Our staff is small when compared to the large bank-owned brokerage houses.

Our promise: You will always deal with the Principal of the firm and the retention of your account will hinge upon success and satisfaction proven by results. The relationship will be built upon the principles of growth through security, minimizing taxation, and understanding and fulfilling your total needs and objectives.
